When we're not filming restaurants, we're in the "Rest Stop Recipes" kitchen! See some of this season's best bites inspired by our time on the road.

Frozen Tie Dye Drink

Ingredients

½ Cup Frozen Mixed Berries
1 oz grenadine
3 oz white or dark rum
½ Cup Frozen Mango
½ oz simple syrup
1 cup ice
1 oz melon liquor
Juice from ½ lime

Directions

Combine frozen mixed berries, grenadine and 1 oz rum in the blender. Blend until smooth, then pour into glass as first drink layer.
Rinse blender.
Combine frozen mango, simple syrup and 1 oz rum in the blender. Blend until smooth, then pour into glass as second drink layer.
Rinse blender.
Combine ice, melon liquor, rum and juice from ½ a lime in the blender. Blend until smooth, then pour into glass as the third and final layer.

Red Wine Slushies

Ingredients

1 ½ cup ice
1 12 oz can frozen fruit punch
½ bottle red wine

Directions

Add all ingredients to the blender and mix under slushy consistency.
Add more ice, if needed.

Lemonade Sangria

Ingredients

1 quart inexpensive Burgundy or red wine
1 quart prepared lemonade
½ cup sugar
Orange slices
Lemon slices
Lime slices
1-2 bunches of Basil

Directions

Mix all ingredients together and chill overnight.

Roasted Sweet & Savory Pecans

Ingredients

1 pound Georgia pecans
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon rosemary
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions

Soak pecans in warm water for 20 minutes.
Drain and pat dry with towel.
Place in a bowl with fitted lid and add 1 teaspoon olive oil.
Cover with lid and shake for about 20 seconds until all nuts are coated with the oil.
Spread onto 2 sheet pans.
Sprinkle half the sea salt and rosemary on one pan. Sprinkle sugar, cinnamon and the remaining salt on the second tray.
Bake for 30 to 40 minutes.

Caramelized Vidalia Onion Dip with Kale

Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil
2 diced Vidalia onions
¼ teaspoon sugar
¼ teaspoon sea salt
1 tablespoon dry sherry
5 sprigs thyme
1 cup kale
1 cup shredded Gruyere 
½ cup sour cream
½ cup mayo
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 loaf sourdough bread

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Set pan on stovetop to medium heat. Drizzle in olive oil.
Once oil is hot, add Vidalia onions, sugar and salt. Stir continuously for 15-20 minutes or until onions are a caramel brown color.
Add in kale, sherry and sprinkle thyme in the mixture. Stir for ~2 minutes.
Remove pan from heat.
In a separate bowl, mix sour cream, mayo, and cheese then stir in the onion mixture from pan.
Transfer the mixture to a cast iron skillet and bake for about 20 minutes.
Toast sourdough bread to serve with the dip.

Baked Turnip Fries

Ingredients

2 lbs turnips
2 tablespoons olive oil
½ teaspoon ground pepper
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon dried garlic

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees fahrenheit.
Cover a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and olive oil.
Slice turnips in half, then cut into ½ inch strips to resemble fries.
Place turnip slices on baking sheet, then sprinkle with pepper, salt and garlic.
Evenly coat the turnips in olive oil and spices, then place in the oven for 20 minutes.
Flip turnips halfway through, then bake until golden brown.

Herb Aioli Dipping Sauce

Ingredients

1 bunch fresh basil
2 tablespoons parsley
1 tablespoon fresh garlic
1 cup mayonnaise or Miracle Whip
1 tablespoon lemon juice
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground pepper
¾ cup olive oil

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Serve with Baked Turnip Fries.

​​Mara Davis is a media personality in Atlanta, GA. Davis is a fixture on radio and TV including Z93, Dave FM, WABE Atlanta's NPR station, The Emmy winning food show "Atlanta Eats" and on CNN/HLN. Currently Davis co-hosts the VoteHer Podcast with Senator Jen Jordan and her newest podcast Sounds Delicious, focusing on how food and pop culture intersect. In addition to media, she's also a full time talent booker for various TV networks and podcasts. She lives in the Virginia Highland area with her husband Mike, son Charlie and dog Brogie.
